Constance Maroulis Obituary

Our wondrous mother, the effervescent Constance Maroulis (née Economos), departed quietly but not willingly from this life on April 6th in Ridgewood, NJ. A resident of Wyckoff, NJ for 45 years, Constance was born in Jamaica, Queens on July 19, 1935 and raised in Park Slope, Brooklyn along with her adored parents and treasured five siblings. Constance graduated from Bay Ridge High School in Brooklyn, NY in 1953 and the Kaupert Secretarial Institute in 1954. Afterward, she worked for JP Morgan Chase & Co., in Manhattan along with her mother's restaurant in Brooklyn. Constance married James Maroulis on February 19, 1961, and they were wed for 52 years until his passing in 2013. The couple moved to Bay Ridge, Brooklyn in 1963, where they started a family before moving to Wyckoff in the spring of 1979. After many years of raising a family, Constance went back to work, first at Bamberger's, which later became Macy's, where she became a dynamic personal shopper for 25 years.

Constance (Connie) was a unique merger of Jackie Kennedy and Joan Rivers, at times refined and elegant, at others hilarious and brash, a true star, she entranced all who met her. Constance’s wit and jovialness captured the hearts of people who had the privilege to know her. A faithful member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Wyckoff, Connie grew up in the early rock 'n' roll years but preferred the warm ballads of Nat King Cole, Hank Williams, Sr., Billy Eckstine and Johnny Mathis and was a good singer in her own right. Constance adored simple pleasures like black licorice, a Ralph Lauren blazer, Yankees baseball, Jeopardy!, the royal family, reading her daily newspaper, Grace Kelly and Elizabeth Taylor movies and her many treasured family summers spent in the Catskills, which she often said were the best years of her life.

Connie loved her children more than life itself and left behind her daughter Anastasia of Ridgewood, her son Constantine of Wyckoff, her granddaughter Malena James and her son Athanasios of New York City and his wife Carleen. She was predeceased by her parents, Konstantine and Olga Economos, her in-laws Athanasios and Paraskevi Maroulis, her husband James Maroulis, her siblings Leon, Mary, Thelma, George, her beloved sister-in-law Tina along with her best friend Kathy Nikitas. She is also survived by her brother John Economos of Brooklyn, NY, cousin Nick Economou of Carmel, NY, her cherished goddaughter Eugenia Zawisha of Garden City, NY, along with her many nieces, nephews, godchildren and relatives here and in Epirus, Greece.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday April 9, 2024 5pm-9pm at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home 257 Godwin Ave. Wyckoff, NJ 07481.
